This very rare black wire wrapped sea glass pendant measures approximately 1 1/4 high by 1 1/2 inches at the widest point. It is a genuine wave-tumbled piece I found on one of our Virgin Islands beaches. Authentic sea/beach glass undergoes years of being broken and tumbled in the ocean, transforming it into a smooth, frosted finished piece. With the advent of the wide use of plastic bottles, jars, and other non-glass containers, sea glass/beach pottery is becoming increasingly harder to find.
Black sea glass is among the rarest of beach glass finds. It is considered a very rare color because it can originate from bottles manufactured as long ago as the 1500s. But black sea glass is not truly black. It is derived from such colors as dark green or dark brown glasses. Because of its thickness, light cannot pass through it, and that makes it appear black. Black sea glass is a collector's item.
